She Knows Parenting

Flu fighting products for kids

Celly Smellys®
Kids can contract the flu not just from others but from contact with things as well. When Jessica Pohlkamp learned that cell phones are dirtier than the bottom of a shoe or a public toilet seat, she invented Celly Smellys® scented cleaning wipes. These LCD-safe wipes for electronics remove germs from the things kids use most: video games, cell phones, iPods, laptops and calculators.

So the next time your kid attempts to clean her cell phone with some spit on her thumb, hand her a pack of Celly Smellys®. Fun fragrances include Berry, Melon and Colada.

Gadget Hygiene

When considering H1N1 & hygiene, don't forget your cell phone, ipod, laptop, video games and digital cameras. The CDC recommends using alcohol based cleansers in addition to regular handwashing to prevent the spread of germs and H1N1. Unlike bacteria, viruses have a protein shell and do not respond to alcohol or anti-bacterial agents when applied. The key to reducing the spread of H1N1 is good old fashion good hygiene. This includes covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, washing your hands and most importantly cleansing your cell phone and gadgets several times per day. Studies show that cell phones are dirtier than a public toilet seat or the bottom of your shoe. People are now considering hygiene in ways they never thought of before and that includes your cell phone. Celly Smellys wipes are LCD safe, portable cleaning wipes specifically made for gadgets. Celly Smellys are lint free, streak free, lens grade polishing cloths that scoop up dirt and grime off of your cell leaving a refreshing burst of clean fragrance including Berry, Melon or Pina Colada. You can pick up a pack from your local FYE store today!

Broken Cookies and a Cup of Cappuccino

It is not every day that one has the opportunity to meet empowered women entrepreneurs. This month I had the pleasure and honor of meeting both Amilya Antonetti and Jeretta Nord.
Amilya Antonetti is a pioneer in the green cleaning product category, a trail blazer for female entrepreneurship & networking and has established many programs to uplift and excel women including the "Broken Cookie" workshop for empowering women; which I attended (as pictured with Amilya above). Amilya has an immense online social media presence, is an Oprah favorite, and is actively working on many upcoming television projects.
Jeretta Nord is an author and has also dedicated her entrepreneurial path to uplifting the otherwise unheard entrep in her book series A Cup of Cappuccino for the Entrepreneur's Spirit. Jeretta has a successful weekly radio show where she profiles and interviews entrepreneurial stories from her books, as well as other well known go getters including Amilya Antonetti!
As a woman entrepreneur, I am learning to think not only for myself, but to lend a reaching hand to others. We are all in different places on our journey of invention, innovation and business and the helping hands we recieve are invaluable to our success and longevity.
A special thank you to some other women entreps and their amazing innovations and businesses: Julianne Paulson (@YRJewelryGal) - Get Rocked Jewelry, Kathy Partak (@KDPartak) - ZipperBack Gloves, Kendra Kroll (@PortaPocketGal) - Porta Pocket, Kim Shulman (@NoSlipCharlie) - No Slip Charlie bathing gloves, Andi Barness (@Andibarness) - Actress.

Pitchmen, Social Media & Las Vegas

Monday September 14th was the big day! Pitchmen season 2 auditioning from the ERA convention at the Paris hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Inventors from all over the country poured into Paris for the opportunity to pitch their product to the Pros Kevin Sullivan (Sully) and Billy Mayes (recently deceased - RIP dear Billy!). The Livemercial production team was filming, interviewing and recording pitches one after the other with host Jennifer Crawford. She had an amazing nack for asking the right questions and maximizing the entrepreneur(s) pitch for a chance to pitch to Sully and a chance to not only appear on the Pitchmen show, but make their product a hit in the direct marketing category.
As the tradeshow doors open we all bolted to the sign up table to get our time slots to present our products. While waiting for my time slot, I strolled around and learned a whole new language called direct marketing. The vendors at the ERA (Electronics Retail Assoc) included full licensing companies down to individual production, talent, resource companies able to piece together what each product needed. I returned to the line for my time slot to pitch my product. While in line, I was chosen to actually pitch to Sully (I'll take that as a compliment) and the butterflies went wild! I had samples, my medical scrubs on and a toilet seat for a prop. "Why the toilet seat?" Sully asked - well, your cell phone is dirtier than a public toilet seat, so clean that cell phone!
This audition was not just me and my invention Celly Smellys scented cell phone wipes. The trip to Las Vegas was also a perfect storm of social media gone wild. I have been a twitter user for months now and over the year I have met several entrepreneurs and tweeters that have integrated into my 'twitterverse' to become a strong and viable network of opportunity. I met several twitterers in Las Vegas at tweetups and tradeshows including @Livemercial, @MavenManagement, @SmashYoTrash, @KDPartak, @YRJewelryGal, @Ginellem, @PortaPocketGal, @VegasBill, @24K, @JuliaRosien, @TKPLeslie, @PeterArceo, @LasVegasHilton and so many more.
I networked like a bandit, I learned a new language, I met some great new friends and I grew as a person and an entrepreneur. Thank you to @Livemercial for the production and the VIP party and to each an every person that shook my hand and said "that's a really cool product". Check the Livemercial site and Youtube site for actual video of my audition and pitch to the Pitchmen!

Enter to Win

As I was sitting in my office last week tapping away at my computer, my cell phone rang. I didn't recognize the local number so I let it go to voice mail. When I got around to checking my messages, there was a huge suprise in store. It was Carolyn Pione from Cincy Tech (one of the sponsors of the Cincinnati Innovates inventor competition). She wanted to know if I would be available to represent the Cincinnati Innovates contest on Fox 19 Cincinnati's morning show. All I would have to do is talk about my invention - Celly Smellys scented cleaning wipes for cell phones and electronics, and what motivated me to enter the competition.

"Of course I will!" I exclaimed. When I entered this competition, I had no idea I would have the opportunity to demo my product in my home town of Cincinnati. Thank you to Shiela Gray and Rob Williams from Fox 19 for chosing Celly Smellys to be one of two innovations highlighted on the morning show segment.

My husband and I spent 6 months in Los Angeles last winter and spring. The sprawling city of L.A. is immeasurable just by gazing out of an airplane window. It is so expansive and vast. How could I be successful in generating enough media to get my product off the ground on a shoe string budget? As we flew back home to Cincinnati and circled over the beautiful Ohio River Valley my short term marketing goals became clear. I want everyone in Cincinnati to know about Celly Smellys. Everyone! Grass roots marketing in my home town will lead me to recognition in big cities like L.A. and soon enough, all over the world.

This is the fourth time Celly Smellys have been a news worthy product in Cincinnati. The local publicity has lead to some national recognition on MSNBC and others. I want to thank anyone who has been instrumental in bringing Celly Smellys to a t.v. near you. Now its time to bring Celly Smellys to a shelf near you!

Diversify your Marketing with a Pro Athlete!

Stars and Stripes National, Pittsburgh, PA (Matt Pohlkamp far right)

In January, my husband got an email with some unwanted news that many Americans have gotten this year - "you no longer have a job". My husband is a professional BMX racer. BMX racing is historically a volatile industry with bike companies coming and going. Even the best of Professional BMXers have been known to race a season without a 'ride' or sponsor. Losing his bike sponsor was not in the plan, especially with our efforts to launch our business Celly Smellys.

"What are we going to do?" he asked me desperately. With my stomach in my throat, a pile of bills on my desk, a warehouse full of inventory and a dream in my heart I simply replied "we have to fight for this".

Almost instantaneously, my husband and I turned to one another and we knew what we had to do. We googled a few race uniform companies and got a quote. I burned art logos to a disk and we got it in the mail. "Can we really do this?" I asked my husband with uncertainty. But it was already written in the stars - Team Celly Smellys was born.

Within a few weeks we had jerseys, press releases out to the major BMX websites and pictures for the BMX magazine publications. What better way to represent our blood, sweat and tears than to have my husband racing for a company he really cares about - OURS!

My husband Matt got a 2nd and 3rd place finish in South Park, PA Elite race series this past weekend. Did I mention he is also the oldest athlete in the Elite BMX race series? He may be the oldest (at 33 years young), but I'm sure he has the most determination because we are racing for our dreams. I know not everyone has access to a professional athlete, but the take home message here is think outside the box! Don't hesitate to get on the gate and jump for your dreams. My husband is living proof that anything is possible.

Thank you Justin Rogers, our amateur BMX team member for winning his class at the Stars and Stripes National in Pittsburgh this weekend. What a way to let the world know about Celly Smellys. We are proud to support the sport of BMX and we thank the BMX community for welcoming us with open arms - and lots of dirt!

Cincinnati Innovates

One day while Twittering away before work, I got a DM by some lady from Cincinnati with the Twitter handle 'Jukemfootball'....Twighlight zone? No.

Are you still stuck on 'DM' and 'Twitter handle'? As you may well be aware, recent media coverage has spotlighted Twitter in connection to spreading global news (namely from Iran). I was lucky enough to finally make some use of the social networking craze via Twitter when I met a local Cincinnatian and inventor - Michelle Spelman.

Michelle 'DM' me (direct message is a way to privately speak with someone while using Twitter when exchanging emails, for example, or in this case juicy Cincinnati inventor competitions). Michelle shared with me her and her husband's invention called Jukem Football - a card game for kids with a football game strategy. She went on further to offer up a unique inventor competition in Cincinnati, Ohio geared towards fostering and supporting entrepreneurialism. "You should totally join!" she exclaimed and she sent me a link to submit my product. As an inventor myself, I jumped at the opportunity to participate in such a competition. And this is no ordinary contest usually seen online or sponsored by some bohemeth company. This is an acutal grass roots, team oriented support network fashioned to help people just like me achieve their dreams!

Who am I? I am a girl with a dream - a dream that would not leave my head for almost 7 years. I pulled my dirty, grimy cell phone out of my purse one day and nothing came to mind as to what to clean it off with. "And wouldn't it be great if I could clean my cell phone off with something that smelled good, like Pina Colada or fresh Berries?" I thought to myself. When the lightbulb went off over my head on that hot Cincinnati day years ago, I had no idea I'd be entering an inventor competition tipped off by another inventor I met on Twitter.

So I've entered the competition and I didn't give it much thought. Afterall I am up against a solar grill and some high tech surgical machinery. But wait! I am number 17 in the votes! So I have started feverishly tweeting about my competition to remind my followers on Twitter of my heated battle for Cincinnati entrepreneurial dollars, support and most importantly, validation that I've got a great idea.

You can browse the competition and vote for your favorites at http://cincinnatiinnovates.com/contest/entry/Funk-defied. That's the link for my submission but you can surf through others as well. In this current economic time, I encourage anyone with an idea to leap and let the net appear.

In addition, I have met some amazing female entrepreneurs on Twitter including http://www.lapcoverz.com/ (personalizable laptop covers), http://www.mittmate.com/ (never lose your ball glove again!), http://www.amilya.com/ (entrepreneur, star and advocate) http://www.mommymillionaire.com/ (Autobiography of my inspiration for starting a biz).

I am auditioning for the chance of a lifetime - entrepreneurialism

What do Kelly Ripa and Jaws have in common? Two up and coming reality t.v. shows featuring [female] entrepreneurs. Now before you roll your eyes - hear me out!

Kelly Ripa [Milojo] is teaming up with TLC and the HSN to select and feature approximately 16 women inventors on their journey to success. From concept to prototypes or fully finished products, Kelly and TLC want to know what its going to take to perfect some unique products with the intent to pass the test for an HSN debut. Powerhouse networks supporting female entrepreneurs! It doesn't get much better than that.

ABC's new show The Shark Tank will feature aspiring and accomplished entrepreneurs on their journey to business success - with a price to pay. In return for much needed start up capital from a panel of 'ruthless' self made millionaires [Mark Burnett Productions - Dragon's Den Canada], entrepreneurs will exchange a percentage of their company for a chance to make it big. The opportunity for media exposure is invaluable if you've got what it takes to 'wow' the panel and commence a feeding frenzy for your product/idea/patent. If not, consider yourself shark bait.

I made the trip to NYC this past week to audition for both of these shows and I'm so glad I did. Aside from the initial eye rolling at the prospect of shallow media stunts - I actually had an amazing time networking with some incredible women and entrepreneurs from around the nation! The casting crew from both shows were kind and supportive and the message was clear - they were there to 'help' us succeed. And you know what, I believe them. Although my product [Celly Smellys - scented cell phone wipes] are simple and straight forward in application, sometimes simple is just better. And I left them all with a refreshing burst of clean for their cell phones, laptops, movie cameras and more.

Kelly Ripa's show is estimated to begin shooting sometime after casting subsides in July, there are 3 more cities you can attend an open casting call. However, the casting crew strongly suggest submitting a video if you cannot attend, as they are considering all applicants for this opportunity. http://www.milojo.com/casting/Casting.html

ABC's The Shark Tank was set to air August 9, 2009 but there is talk of a postponed debut. I'll keep you updated. http://abc.go.com/primetime/sharktank/index?pn=index&partner=rm&cid=rm+google+shark_tank+abc_shark_tank

Either way, win or lose, show or no show, my business will continue to ride the waves - steering clear of sharks for sure!
